In February I am off for a wee bit of adventuring and wanted to take the opportunity to learn about midwifery in Nepal. I will be spending the majority of my time volunteering at the Aadharbhut Prasuti Sewa (APS) birth centre in Kathmandu. APS, which translates as 'basic maternity service' was set up as a social enterprise in 2007 by a group of Nepali nurse-midwives with the aim of improving the health of women and children within Kathmandu and across Nepal. Targeting middle to low income families, the centre aims to improve the accessibility and utilisation of maternity care by providing free or affordable reproductive health services. In a country where midwifery as an independent profession is in its infancy, APS also seeks to be a model institution, offering training to other healthcare workers to help improve services throughout the country. I plan to take out some resources and equipment which can be more easily accessed in the UK so if anyone would like to donate a couple of quid it will be much appreciated! I have listed below the items that have been requested as being most needed:
